A member of the Twitter community recently followed me. I received the standard email notification. I went through my criteria for engaging with new followers on Twitter. And this member passed.
And, in the process I noticed they had over 11,000 followers and were following about the same number. A few thoughts, then, crossed my mind:
- Woo-who! Somebody with that many followers found something interesting enough to add me to their huge list of followers!
- Woo-who! Something I said stood out from the stream of tweets they are reading!
- Um....what? What interested this member so much to follow one more. Why me?
I asked. No response.
Cool. Whatever. They're busy. They have 11,000 people to follow and 11,000 people to keep happy.
A week or so later Qwitter informed this same person had...quit following me.
And a few thoughts crossed my mind:
- Woo-who! Somebody with that many followers found something I tweeted annoying enough to remove me from their huge list!
- Woo-who! Something I said stood out from the stream of tweets they are reading!
- Um....what?
I didn't ask.
At the end of the day, none of it mattered.
What matters with social media are the interactions. With Twitter, it's the ReTweets, DMs and replies.
And in this instance, there was no interaction.
And in this instance, there was no significance.
