I was out for a run today, right after a great radio show with Warren Whitlock. ( And at 55 I’ve earned the right to use that term, run, generously. ) Headphones were in place. But I chose silence, instead.
As I ran in silence and in the heat...I found the connections among the loose threads of conversations. Snippets of ideas, some quotes from the most recent guest on the radio show, a prospect that could be turning to a client, some recent events online and off, slowly wove themselves with their common themes...as I shuffled along in that long, slow, run.
Together with this post, I composed 2 more which I'll write today-ish and post next week:
- You can't accept our order? Hire somebody!
- 2-Step Marketing Plan
- Creativity comes during the running. A few endorphins, some alert but unfocused awareness during the run, a relaxed mind, a little bump in the heartrate, some infused mind-body coordination and...you have an aha moment of clarity.
- Communication comes during the writing of the blog post.
- Connections are made when I Retweet this blog post, now done automatically thanks to Typepad and Twitter’s friendship.
And in today's economy:
- Creativity is needed to drive ideas and solutions to keep a company out in front of its competitors and in front with its employees and customers.
- Communication skills are needed to communicate those ideas and create stakeholders in bringing the ideas to life.
- Connections are what’s needed to spread the solutions and what’s needed to bring a new source of ideas and energy, passion and enthusiasm, to the organization.
I’m thinking our educational system needs fewer standardized tests and more Runnin’, Writin’ and Retweeting. We’ll have more ideas, with better communication skills to share them, and more connections to share them with and better health to celebrate.
Maybe, social media policies can include an endorsement, encouragement, a nudge, even permission(!) to do a little runnin' before they write and retweet.
