I announced in May, 2010, the 52 - Week Employee Recognition Plan. This is the 29th week. The lesson this week is:
Stop by and say “hi”.
This requires little investment of either time or energy; a few moments, tops.
You walk away from your desk/office and walk over to that person, persons, groups... in order to say...’hi’.
Simple, efficient and packed with meaning. The meaning is that person is important in your day. Important enough to stop by and just say ‘hi’.
An invitation is quietly offered, too. That invitation to engage further. Personal or professional. The invitation rests with them.
Maybe, this step should be step number 1. I could see that. But in this context it is more a reminder.
The emphasis is on simple and efficient. That respects them, their time while it recognizes. Only you can know, with regular practice, where that limit rests.
Just stop by and say ‘hi’.
Recognize them.
Respect them with recognizing their name.
Show them their presence is important. You’re interested that they are here.
You are open to engaging. They are invited to engage, if they wish.
A simple step like this over time builds trust, communication, understanding and these we know are some of the qualities of engagement.

You can start with any week of the 52 - Week Employee Recognition Plan and make that your first week.
You can take one of those weeks and turn it into a month or commit to an accelerated pace and complete 6 of the weeks in one month.
You can create your own week of employee recognition. Share that journey here. Share it in your blog or Twitter or Facebook.
But, do something to recognize your employees! They set your brand apart as your ultimate competitive edge.
And the more you recognize their achievements, the more achievements you'll see and they'll enjoy, along with your customers and and shareholders, partners and vendors.
