Deborah Shane hosts a great radio program called The Metropolis.
Her most recent show was a wrapup for 2010 and a look-forward for 2011.
Guests on the show were:
- J.T. O’Donnell, founder of Career Realism whose site offers tons of resources and tools.
- Michelle Villalobos, speaker-writer-trainer-marketing & sales consultant and more at her excellent resource-rich site, Michelle Villalobos
- Miss Destructo, who is Destroyer of Social Media Boredom. Chief Blue Cheese at Head Of Lettuce Media...was included but had a last minute schedule conflict.
- And me.
Preparing for the show, I spent some time visiting their sites. There I found three trends for 2011.
Let Love In
Miss Destructo wrote an outstanding post titled Have You given Up on the Good in People? She ended with this:
Among all of the chaos in figuring out the next steps, in the past few weeks I have learned to never give up on yourself or the world… despite the negativity, the critics and anything that has happened in your past. Learn from those times that hurt you the most…these experiences change you, you are the one to decide if they are going to be used to change your life for the good or for the bad. Despite the risks, despite the pain…. choose well, move on and love often.
Let love in,
There’s been a lot of chaos, negativity, critics and repercussions from our past thrown in our faces this year. Would you agree? More so than in recent years, it seems.
And, yet, there’s our opportunity.
- Learn from those times...
- Decide if they are going to be used to change your life for the good or for the bad.
- Despite the risks, despite the pain…. choose well, move on and love often.
- Let love in
We don’t really have a choice. We have to trust that if we let love in...that if we choose well, move on and decide to use these moments to change our life we can learn from these times. Together.
Social media makes that last part, learn from these times, together, use them together to change our life for the good...love often. let love in. But even without social media we can do that.
Some visitors here may either be confused reading this here. I understand. It is a confusing time. And I know I am not living that adage completely. But I do choose to keep moving forward towards it, away from its opposite. And that brings us to the next theme:
Get Very Real
J.T. O’Donnell, offers real-world advice, real-world perspective, real-world stories from the trenches. To trust, to let love in, we need to Get Very Real.
That means being transparent and open about what we really, really want. And what we really, really, bring to the table. And how much we really, really want it.
That is our life worth having and living and yes, even fighting to have it.
There are tons of dead jobs and businesses and markets waiting, otherwise and millions of dead-end careers and lives waiting for us, otherwise.
Because, if we choose a life worth living and if we choose to keep it, then we need help from others. These others are like-minded individuals who have made the same choices.
We need to connect, communicate and collaborate with them Those A-Ha Moments are those moments where solutions present themselves like church bells ringing, like hot fudge sundaes as appetizers on the way to main course, like mini-learning moments you need in a culture of learning, as Gary Harpst put it.
Regularly Occurring A-Ha Moments
That’s what Michelle Villalobos does. She delivers "a-ha!" moments, insights and strategies in business.
Businesses, us working together, will need a sustainable source of A-Ha Moments, moments where we discover a new solution for the next bigger challenge, if we hope to survive. Routine, SOPs, cogs-in-wheels, disengaged teams and their members, are not part of 2011’s success source. We’re going to have to have A-Ha moments every moment if we’re going to create a sustainable business.
If we put all that together in a business, in a business model, in a purpose in a culture, if we turn to the one over in the next cubicle, and trust them enough to get very real and open about what you each want together, can achieve together, and if you love each othe enough to forgive each other’s failures and there will be a lot of them, then you can learn from them, and then you can create aha moments regularly, certainly one a day before lunch.
Now when that starts happening, it’s a vicious cycle. You have an aha moment and you realize you can have them if you are open and transparent about what you want and what you can achieve and what you need, you trust and (icky moment warning) you let a little love in and then you take a step forward with trust and you do this over and over again you have a business where others who have done the same, taken the same steps, are engaged in creating something remarkable. Then your customers go out and remark on it. Now you have a word-of-mouth engine running, starting rev up.
Now you let the clutch loose with all that engagement...and bam you have an Aha business, with lots of love and trust that is very very real. And it's growing very, very, fast. Everyone wants to be part of this experience.
What do you think?
Me? I think it'll work. Well, it'll work if we...Trust and let a little love in, get very real and work to create a culture of regularly occurring aha moments.
So...is it worth it? Could we stand the risks? Could we stand a little pain?
Here's to 2011 with a little bit of pain, a little bit of risk, a lot of love and trust and some very real, very regular, aha moments for us all!
