I announced in May, 2010, the 52 - Week Employee Recognition Plan. This is the 48th week. The step this week is:
-
Find a success to celebrate together every day
Why not, right? What have companies got to lose?
The management philosophy of constantly seeking faults, anomalies of identifying weaknesses that need to be fixed has created a disengaged workforce. The metrics for that approach include:
* 10% of a company's workforce may be actively sabotaging the efforts of others;
* less than 40% of employees are engaged in their work, emotionally and intellectually;
* a decline of 75% in their Return on Assets among public companies since 1965.
If focusing on errors, faults, mistakes and weakness generates those kinds of results, maybe doing the opposite, maybe finding and celebrating our success, will have the opposite effect?
It is really a matter of attention.
Wherever we put our attention, that same place grows stronger in our lives.
What gets measured gets done.
So...why not put our attention, why not measure our successes...in order to celebrate them...together...every day?
Clearly, those successes are ones that align with our goals, both as an individual and as an organization.
A plan like this recognizes the strengths and contributions of each organization member, individually and collectively.
Defining and communicating the employee value proposition can result in a 47% higher shareholder return as compared to companies who choose to not define that value. The Employee Engagement Group
What better way to define, communicate and reinforce that value proposition than recognizing AND celebrating the strengths and success....daily?
It creates a culture of learning and celebration.
The celebrations serves to reinforce this culture of learning, celebration and strengths.
Who wouldn't want to be engaged with this kind of culture? Employees or customers?
Companies with above-average levels of engagement show faster rates of growth, higher equity valuations, lower employee turnover rates, better profits and cash-flows.
Companies with above-average levels of engagement also create higher levels of loyalty among their customers.
Oh sure. There will be naysayers. Some of that arises from fear: fear of change or fear of recognition. Some do well in a culture of disengagment, disenfranchisement. It's comfortable for them. They might be afraid that this will change and they might be exposed, so to speak.
But back to that question? What have you got to lose?

You can start with any week of the 52 - Week Employee Recognition Plan and make that your first week.
You can take one of those weeks and turn it into a month or commit to an accelerated pace and complete 6 of the weeks in one month.
You can create your own week of employee recognition. Share that journey here. Share it in your blog or Twitter or Facebook.
But, do something to recognize your employees! They set your brand apart as your ultimate competitive edge.
And the more you recognize their achievements, the more achievements you'll see and they'll enjoy, along with your customers and and shareholders, partners and vendors.
