Are you small business leader looking for a quick fix? You think that maybe what revenues lack is a cute ad or a viral cartoon? Maybe a nifty new slogan for your brand or more Facebook friends? Or, wait, you want to jump on the latest craze and sign up for those discount coupon programs....
Well, if you are, then carry on. There is nothing to read here.
However, if you are a small business leader who looks for the means and tools to create a sustainable means to success, if you want to create a culture of learners that constantly help each other learn the new skills you will need to remain leaders in your business and industry, and who wants to confront the challenge of executing strategy consistently...I may have a book you should read. And keep it close at hand. And read again and agin.
Six Disciplines for Excellence: Building Small Businesses That Learn, Lead and Last is a book many times over the years. I first read it in 2006-ish. And then again in 2008. I interviewed its author, Gary Harpst. You can listen to our conversation here. I included it in my list of well-worn business books to keep close at hand.
You're asking So what?
Fair enough.
Gary outlines 6 disciplines for ...They are:
- Decide What’s Important

Notice also that top 10 tips and current business bingo buzzwords are absent, too.
Business excellence, dare I say, transcends au currant business theories and experts. Business excellence is built with the same principles regardless if your business operates today or last century. Those principles are these six principles which Gary has listed, described and discussed in detail.
And he describes and discusses them in a single chapter in such detail that at the end you have a plan to bring that principle to your business business today. And tomorrow. And bring others into your plan to learn that principle today and tomorrow. That is the foundation for your excellent business: A culture of learners who collectively create a culture of leaders.
Business now changes so fast, so often, as we face a global marketplace. The companies who can create a continuous, sustainable, culture of learners are the companies who will create cultures of leaders. That makes their business a leader. Today AND tomorrow.
Now you have a book with routines and practices that bring universal principles into your business today. Each of them are doable today. There are no great big investments required. The risks are small. The steps are doable, each and every day.
Now, there's no excuse. That's so what.
