So, if you’re looking for ways to boost overall productivity and improve your reputation and profits in one stroke, the best way to do it is through your employees. Of course, the exceptional quality of your products and services speaks for itself, but without the cooperation of your employees, its voice is not heard beyond the walls of your organization.
And, to enhance your employees’ productivity and be assured of their loyalty, here’s what you need to do:
Be fair: Don’t treat your employees different from their colleagues; rather, be fair in your dealings with all of them. When you take sides in arguments or show favoritism, you risk being labelled as an unfair boss or superior who is blinded by their affection of bias for a certain individual or group of people. When you reward and punish without prejudice or favoritism, your employees find it easier to take criticism when you reprimand them.
Give them a little leeway: Work is important and so is productivity, but what’s more important is coming across as a human being than just a boss. Don’t begrudge your employees time with their families and friends or the occasional day off due to sickness or other unexpected contingencies. No one wants to shirk work purposely, so when you don’t allow time off when it is necessary, you’re seen as an unreasonable ogre who does not deserve their loyalty.
Reward hard work: Don’t wait for your employees to ask for a raise when they deserve it for their hard work and exceptional performance. Instead, be generous with praise and rewards when your employees deserve them and show your appreciation as openly as you do your criticism.
Avoid nepotism: When you promote or favor people who are related to you or your superiors or who have ties to high places and people even if they are not as capable as your other employees, you’re not promoting a healthy work environment and one that is conducive to boosting confidence and productivity in your workforce.
Motivate using the right methods: It may seem like a good idea to keep your employees under your thumb and get them to work using threats or because they are scared of being fired, but unless they are motivated to work using incentives, praise and rewards, your work environment is going to be filled with hostility and suppressed resentment. These baser emotions cannot be kept down or hidden for long and tend to rise up and burst out when you least expect it or can afford it.
