Google is about to make ads on television work just like ads on the web. Through Google, advertisers will know how many times their ads were viewed. They’ll be able to target audiences based on location and viewing history. In other words, TV advertisers will have access to the same audience intel online advertisers take for granted. via www.wired.com
"That's great ... man. Now, what ... are we supposed to do? We're in some pretty s---now, man." - Hudson, in Aliens, says this after hearing the news that their drop ship crashed.
That's what I thought when I read that Google's crash-landing in my living room. Now Big Brother Eric and those who work at The Circle, aka Google, can watch what I watch or choose to ignore.
Ads are things I choose to ignore. Turns out I'm in good company ... with you. 57% of video ads run but aren't seen. Link
What's never discussed is how many of these ads generate click-throughs? I'm thinking the only clicks they generate are the ones that close the ad.
After watching hundreds, even thousands, of YouTube videos I've yet to see an ad that shared any connection with the video's topic. A soap ad at the start of Stevie Ray Vaughan? Seriously.
What's struck me as I'm indulging in this rant is that TV is a dying media. The ONLY reason I watch TV is for college football and basketball. More and more people turn to Hulu, Amazon, Netflix. Why? We watch what we want when we want and, wait for it, there're NO ADS!
Other than that, it's one more reason to turn off my TV after March Madness ends. Game Over.
