You know the success of your business rests on the shoulders of your employees. That’s why you offer them a raise, put a ping-pong table in the staff room and provide other “cool” perks, like an office beer fridge and weekly yoga, right?
But a recent report by TINYpulse shows all those perks may be for naught if employees aren’t also receiving the occasional “thank you.”
Only those with the perks and raises are saying this, at least in this article. Given that on a whole, wages have only increased a few percentage points over the past 5-6 years maybe it's the employees at these companies with raises and ping pong tables who should be saying "thank you."
Hold On, hold on. ... I've worked at a company whose revenues grew, principals' income rose and we never received a raise. They said "thank you" a lot. It became meaningless at some point.
Likewise, I've receive a raise as a sort of bribe - "Here, take it; stop asking about priorities, training, resources, etc."
You have to have both. And you have to communicate a clear, consistent, message with each and how you deliver them and why and when, too, if you want a sustainable business that attracts and keeps the best people (not assets or resources).
