You're busy. You're running a company. You're schedule's already overloaded from that challenge even in good times.
And now there's a recession at your doorstep.
One of the great opportunities in a recession is the access to the numbers of motivated, talented, individuals seeking a well-run survivor like your company.
So, to help you sift through and pick the best talent prospects to bring in for a full CIDS interview, I've listed 3 questions you should ask before their first full interview and to whom you should ask.
Question 1: TORC: Threat of Reference Check. It's part of the CIDS or chronological in-depth interview as explained in the book: The Smart Interviewer. It's an excellent time-saver for busy leaders. Ask the prospect: May I contact your previous managers or supervisors as a reference for you? Their answer or its lack will tell you whether your time is wisely spent meeting in person with them.
Who: your prospect
When: during your first interaction
Question 2: What do you want to create here? This question comes from Mike Wagner, CEO of White Rabbit Group. It gets to the heart of the prospect's motivation for joining your firm.
- Are they serious about meeting with you?
- Have they done their homework?
- Do they understand your company, its brand promises?
- Do they see opportunities for where they can add value?
- Do they want to be an employee or a volunteer?
- Will they arrive early and leave late or arrive and leave on time?
Who: your prospect
When: during your first interaction
Question 3: How would you feel if they worked for your competition? If it's glee you feel, then let them work for your competition. If it's dread you feel, maybe you better talk with them.
Who: yourself
When: throughout the interview process
This isn't my question. Though, I can't rememer where I heard it. I remember it clearly, though. It's a great self-referral, reality check.
And I have an ebook The Collaborative Hiring Process that shares tools, tips and resources to create a wave of success with each hire. It's free. I hope it helps.
